No rust. 70,000 miles. A hard-to-find A.R.E. camper shell. A collector's car in near-perfect condition.
Purchased in Washington, April 2021. Since then I've put another $39,041 into it — the build itself, plus meticulous service.
I have a detailed folder of all work and receipts — dates, shops, invoice numbers, part numbers, etc.
The Baja is a Subaru wagon with a pickup bed on the back — same flat-four engine, same all-wheel drive. Subaru built them from 2003 to 2006 and stopped in April of that last year. The turbo is the one people want, and there weren't many.
The truck started out in California. I bought it in Washington in April 2021. The engine work is the bulk of it — GrimmSpeed hardware throughout, a proper tune, and a lot more cooling than it left the factory with.
I moved it to Calgary in early 2023 and it passed a full out-of-province inspection when it arrived. Independent shops have looked after it ever since, most recently in April 2026.
I've driven it and used it. It just hasn't covered many miles — 57,000 when I bought it in 2021, 70,000 today, with records for all of it.
Why I'm selling: I'm not driving it. It sits in my garage and I don't have time for it. Nothing more than that.
Subaru only built about 30,000 Bajas in total, over four years. They had planned on 24,000 a year. Production stopped in April 2006, and only a fraction of those were turbos.
Most of the ones still for sale have been worked hard. Current listings run from 126,000 to over 250,000 miles. This one had 57,000 on it when I bought it in April 2021, and 70,000 now.
Rust is what kills these trucks. It starts in the rear quarters, the bed seams and the rockers, and once it takes hold the truck isn't worth fixing. It's the main reason most Bajas are worthless now.
This Baja was originally sold at a Subaru dealer in N. California, then purchased by a senior in Washington, then I purchased it — where it spent two years in Arizona while I built it up. When I brought it to Alberta in 2023 it passed a licensed out-of-province inspection, which fails a vehicle outright for frame or body corrosion.
A.R.E. stopped making these caps years ago and the major aftermarket retailers no longer list one for the Baja at all. Most that were made have long since been thrown out. On the Baja forums people run wanted ads for them and wait months.
I found this one in Oregon and drove out to collect it.
Every service and every part is logged — date, shop, invoice number, parts and labour. I'll send the full workbook to anyone who's serious.
Most of it is preventative — fluids, filters, gaskets, alignments, coolant and transmission service, all done early. There's no deferred maintenance waiting for you.
The truck is in Calgary, Alberta. It started life in California, I bought it in Washington, and it came north in 2023. It's on an Alberta title now and I still have the prior Arizona title, which makes taking it back a lot simpler than importing a Canadian-market car.
I'll talk about driving or delivering it to a US destination as part of the deal. You'll need to confirm your own import and registration requirements, but I have the original US purchase paperwork and the Canadian import documents and they come with the truck.
Pricing is in US dollars. Payment terms, settlement currency and delivery are all open to discussion.
Come look at it. Or send a mechanic — a pre-purchase inspection at any independent shop you pick, here in Calgary or wherever it ends up, is fine by me.
